You moved state. Your documents did not.

A will validly executed in one state is generally recognised in another. The documents that quietly stop working are the other ones.

Roughly one in eleven American households moves in a year, and a change of state is the single most common reason a plan on this platform gets flagged for reissue.

Your will is probably fine

A will validly executed under the law of one state is generally recognised in another, so you are not suddenly without a will the day the truck arrives.

What can differ is the detail that matters later: community property rules, spousal elective share, and whether your new state offers a self proving affidavit your old one did not.

The powers of attorney are the real problem

These are the most state specific documents in a plan, and they are the ones used under time pressure. A bank or a hospital in your new state looking at an out of state form is exactly the friction the document exists to prevent.

Reissuing them under your new state’s rules takes minutes and is free on any plan.

And the things that are not documents at all

A trust that owns real property needs the new house retitled into it, or the trust does not govern the largest asset you own. That is the funding job again, and moving is when it most often gets missed.

Beneficiary designations move with the account rather than with you, so they usually need nothing. Check them anyway while you are in the file.

What we do when you update your address

The platform tells you what changed, regenerates the affected documents under the new state’s rules at no cost, and gives you a fresh signing checklist. Your recommendations reorder to put the reissue at the top.

It is one of the clearest cases for unlimited free edits: a plan you cannot afford to update stops being accurate the first time your life changes.

Legacy Buddy provides document creation tools, not legal advice.
